MAHRA’s Legislative Committee monitors state and federal legislation impacting the development and management of affordable housing for low-income families and community development programs in Maryland.  It provides information to educate state and federal elected officials on the programs administered by MAHRA members and issues important to the clients we serve.  The Legislative Committee actively supports the efforts of MAHRA members to maintain regular communication with their elected representatives.

Through its Legislative Committee, MAHRA also provides information to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the state Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) on how proposed regulations and administrative actions will affect Maryland families and housing programs.

 MAHRA’s strategic objectives carried out by the Legislative Committee include:  

1. Continuing to follow and educate State elected officials on matters that:

a. Directly affect Maryland’s housing agencies; and
b.That impact the clients we serve

2. Increasing MAHRA’s involvement in matters federal by

a. Commenting on HUD Notices and legislative proposals; and
b. Educating the members of Congress.

3. Taking steps to encourage the involvement of our member agencies by

a. Sharing MAHRA model letters as they are developed in steps 1 and 2 above 
b. Keeping the Legislative Committee portion of the MAHRA web site a key resource; and
c. Urging member agencies to inform/include the MAHRA Legislative Committee when they are commenting on legislative matters

4. Facilitating a sharing of communications with our landlords and consumers that have a legislative element in the interest of building a stronger professional network.
